Maldives Receives Integrity Award from
the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC)
The Government of Maldives is proud to
announce that the Maldives has been awarded the Integrity Award by the Global
Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC) at the Eleventh Session of
the Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the WHO Framework Convention on
Tobacco Control (FCTC), held in Geneva.
The award was formally received on behalf
of the Government by Her Excellency Ambassador Dr.Salma Rasheed, the Permanent
Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office and other
International Organizations in Geneva.
This global recognition reflects the
Maldives’ strong and sustained commitment to advancing tobacco control,
strengthening governance, and protecting public health from tobacco industry
interference. The Maldives’ decisive policy actions—including the comprehensive
ban on electronic cigarettes, increased import duties on tobacco products, and
the pioneering Generational Tobacco Ban for those born on or after 1 Jan 2007—have
positioned the country as a model for FCTC Parties worldwide.
GGTC is an international NGO that brings
together, leading global and regional tobacco control advocates, focusing on
transparency, accountability, and countering tobacco industry influence. The
organization works closely with FCTC Parties and actively contributes to COP
and its subsidiary meetings. GGTC also produces the globally recognized Tobacco
Industry Interference Index, documenting industry practices and highlighting
countries’ efforts to counter such interference.
Receiving the Integrity Award at COP11
further underscores the Maldives’ leadership and commitment to upholding the
highest standards of public health governance and building a healthier future
for its people.
