International Nurses Day 2026

12 May 2026
As the Maldives celebrates International Nurses Day 2026, nurses continue to play a vital role in providing healthcare services across the country.
According to the latest statistics, there are 3,907 nurses working in the Maldives. This includes 3,593 female nurses and 314 male nurses. Among them, 2,503 nurses are Maldivians, while 1,404 are expatriates.
Around 49% of nurses are working in the atolls, while 51% are serving in the Greater Malé Area.
The Government has been working to strengthen nursing services and create better opportunities for nurses. Since the Nursing Structure was introduced in 2018, improvements have been made to career development and salary structures.
Today, nurses also have more opportunities to specialize in areas such as cardiac care and neuro care. Efforts are also ongoing to strengthen professional standards and the nursing licensing system.
This year’s International Nurses Day theme is, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
The Government also aims to further strengthen the nursing profession by creating more opportunities for growth and development.
On this special day, appreciation and thanks are extended to all nurses in the Maldives for their hard work, dedication, and compassionate care provided to the community.
