Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare Signs MoU with Suwasevana Hospital to Establish Clinical Internship Program New

The Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Suwasevana Hospital of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to establish a Clinical Internship Program for Maldivian medical graduates.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives by the Minister of State for Health, Family and Welfare, Ms. Khadeeja Abdul Samad Abdulla, and on behalf of Suwasevana Hospital by Mr. Bandula Egodage, Director of Suwasevana Hospital, during a ceremony held at Moomina Maalam, Roashanee Building.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Health, Family and Welfare, Ms. Geela Ali, senior officials from the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare, representatives of Suwasevana Hospital, and Senior Officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister of Health, Family and Welfare, Ms. Geela Ali highlighted the importance of investing in the development of a competent and resilient health workforce. She noted that the partnership will expand opportunities for Maldivian medical graduates to gain structured clinical training and practical experience, strengthening their competencies and supporting their professional development.

The MoU aims to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare and Suwasevana Hospital in the development of skilled medical professionals through the establishment of a structured Clinical Internship Program. Under the agreement, Suwasevana Hospital will provide one-year clinical internship opportunities for Maldivian MBBS graduates, with up to 20 training placements available annually. The programme is expected to provide graduates with valuable clinical exposure in a supervised hospital environment, enhancing their practical skills and supporting their transition into independent medical practice.

This collaboration reflects the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka and represents a significant step towards strengthening medical education and capacity building in the Maldives.
