World Food Safety Day Celebrated in F. Nilandhoo

06 June 2026
World Food Safety Day was marked in F. Nilandhoo with a series of activities aimed at raising awareness on food safety.
As part of the programme, a door-to-door awareness campaign was conducted in the island to educate the public on safe food handling practices. Residents were informed about proper methods of preparing, storing, and consuming food safely at home. A special assembly was also held for school students, focusing on the importance of food safety and hygiene.
A formal ceremony was held to mark the occasion. The ceremony was graced by the First Lady of the Maldives, Madam Sajidha Mohamed. It was also attended by the Member of Parliament for Nilandhoo constituency, Fatimath Saudha, the Council President, and senior officials from relevant ministries and the island council.
During the ceremony, the MFDA logo was officially launched, and the “Samaavaru” programme was inaugurated to strengthen awareness among food service providers.
This year’s theme for World Food Safety Day is “From burden to solution – safe food everywhere.”
The theme highlights the importance of ensuring safe food and the risks associated with unsafe food. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 600 million people fall ill each year due to unsafe food, resulting in approximately 420,000 deaths. Children under the age of five account for a significant proportion of these cases.
Authorities emphasized that food safety is a shared responsibility, involving all stages from production to consumption, and requires proper hygiene and safe practices by everyone involved.
