“Agreement between the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Maldives On Establishing a Hospital Assistance and Cooperation Program” was signed today at Ministry of Health, Maldives.
The agreement was jointly signed by Minister of Health, Abdulla Ameen and His Excellency Zhang Lizhong, Ambassador from China to Maldives. This agreement will pave the way to establish a collaborative ophthalmology center in Maldives. Which will be located in Hulhumale’ Hospital.
The agreement aims to improve the ophthalmologic department at Hulhumale’ Hospital and develop it for minor and major surgeries to be carried out. Chinese and Maldivian ophthalmologists will provide their services at Hulhumale’ hospital. Furthermore, regular capacity building programmes will be carried out for Maldivian doctors and nurses in Hulhumale’ Hospital and Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center in China
Two eye camps were conducted with assistance from China in 2015 and 2017. More than 1000 people were screened and a total of 186 cataract surgeries were carried out. Medical equipment worth MVR 9.2 million was donated to Maldives after the camps.
Establishing a collaborative ophthalmology center in Maldives is a key area of the Memorandum of understanding signed between the government of China and the government of Maldives in 2017.
