72nd Session of the World Health Assembly organized by the World Health Organization has begun today in Geneva, Switzerland. 194 Member States of the WHO are taking part in this meeting from 20th to 28th May 2018. Many important decisions regarding global health would be taken during this meeting. The world health assembly is the largest meeting with health policy makers, actors drawn from across the world.
The Maldivian delegation to the World Health Assembly this year is lead by Minister of Health Mr. Abdulla Ameen, accompanied by the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Dr. Hala Hameed and high level staff of the Ministry of Health and Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva. Minister of Health Mr. Abdulla Ameen will represent Maldives as the Vice Chairman of Committee B of the Assembly this year.
Minister Ameen is scheduled to deliver the official statement at the plenary of the World Health Assembly on behalf of Maldives on the topic “Universal Health Coverage: Leaving no one behind” on the second day of the Assembly.
A number of technical briefings and side events will also be carried out at the World Health Assembly. Maldives would be co-sponsoring 2 side events on “Safe and Affordable Surgery” and on “Air pollution, Climate change, Oceans and Health”. In both the side events, Minister of Health will deliver Statements as penalists.
The Maldives delegation is scheduled to meet with other Member States to discuss bilateral collaborations and will also be meeting with the South-East Asia Regional Director, Stop TB, Global Fund, International Organization for Migrants and other health organizations as well.
Similar to last year, a Health Promotion event “Walk the Talk” was carried out the day before the Assembly in Geneva. The main purpose of this run/walk was to promote physical activity as part of a healthy sustainable future. The Maldivian delegation took part in this event.
