President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has launched the ‘National Strategic Plan to End T.B in Maldives’ at a ceremony held in Jens hotel on Thursday Feb 15.
The ‘National Strategic Plan to End T.B in Maldives’, compiled in collaboration with W.H.O, includes a 5-year national campaign against T.B.; of which the goal is to reduce TB incidence rate by 50%, and TB deaths by 75% by year 2022, in comparison to 2017.
In 2016, the Maldives had notified 169 cases of TB, which is the top infectious disease killer in the world. President Yameen is the first Head of State in the South East Asia region, to launch a national level strategic plan to end TB in the country.
At the ceremony Minister of Health highlighted the recent successes of disease eliminations and developments of the Health Sector. And how the government has expanded the patients care and services within the last 5 years. Minister expressed his sincer appreciation for HEP for launching the National TB Strategic Plan. Although the work of elimination is an ambitious agenda, this is a first step towards a bigger goal of eliminination.
With the strategic plan in place and with commitment from other sector, Maldives is in the way towards TB elimination by 2022.
Also in the ceremony Ministry of Health received donation 100 electronic beds from Tree Top Health investments.
Aslo in the ceremony, cabinet ministers, heads of UN agencies and high level officials were present.
